Four Planned Parenthood Clinics Close

IFL has just learned that Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced earlier today that they will be closing four clinics. The clinics set to close by June 30, 2017 are Sioux City, Keokuk, and Burlington. The Bettendorf center will provide limited telemed abortion services after June 30, but will also eventually close. Planned Parenthood has clinics in Urbandale, Ames, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Council Bluffs, Cedar Falls and two in Des Moines. Planned Parenthood stated that the reason for the closures was due to the legislation passed this last session that stopped family planning funds from going to clinics that provided abortion. Governor Branstad signed this bill last week.

"This is good news for families in the state of Iowa," stated IFL Director Maggie DeWitte. "We worked hard this last session to educate legislators and the general public that there are many quality community health centers in Iowa that provide comprehensive healthcare to women and families across the state. And they do so without without taking the life of precious human beings. This is a victory for our state, and IFL is committed to continue working to see all abortion clinics closed in Iowa."

Gabriel's Corner Receives Heritage Award

Posted by gabrielscorner on February 24, 2016 at 9:50 AM Comments comments (0)

Each year, CHI Health Mercy Hospital hosts the Heritage Awards Dinner to honor individuals from southwest Iowa for their professional and personal contributions to the community. The event also raises funds to support professional development opportunities for Mercy employees.

The gala evening begins with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. March 19 at the Mid-America Center, 1 Arena Way, followed by a gourmet meal, awards ceremony and post-event celebration.

Honorees this year will include Marcia Joffee-Bouska, local artist; David A. Christiansen, retired owner of Christy Creme; Fred Maher, retired administrator for the Council Bluffs Community School District; and Jean and Kathy Plourde, president and vice president of Gabriel’s Corner.

“Each year, we honor great individuals for the contributions they make that enrich our community,” said Marie Knedler, president of Mercy Hospital. “But the event also helps the people of southwest Iowa by raising funds that support our staff so that they can attend conferences where they learn new techniques and best practices from their peers around the country.”

The funds from last year’s event were used to provide 28 employees with scholarships to professional educational events in eight different areas of care, including critical care, emergency medicine, behavioral health, surgery and quality.

Awards ranged from $1,000 to $2,000 to help staff with costs associated with registration and travel expenses to a number of different conferences. These professional medical conferences help the Mercy Hospital staff take advantage of a wide range of learning opportunities to bring back the latest in health care advances to the hospital and to the community.

“The knowledge our staff brings back from these conferences helps everyone who works in our hospital – and, in turn, helps our patients,” said Denise McNitt, vice president of patient care services at Mercy Hospital. “We are very fortunate to receive the support from the Heritage Awards Dinner to enable Mercy to continue to provide high-quality care for the body, mind and spirit of every person.”

After returning from these conferences, each person at Mercy shares what they learned with others at the hospital.
